Sep 04, 2002 Today, Bodie stands just as time, fire and the elements have left it - a genuine California gold-mining ghost town. Designated a state historic park in 1962, approximately 170 buildings are protected in a state of arrested decay on more than 1,000 remote acres, administered by the California Department of Parks and Recreation.
The Bodie mining district is not contiguous with California’s primary quartz mining areas, and its discovery and development occurred later. During the first couple years of the famed 1849 California gold rush, individuals and small companies of miners staked mining claims along streams on the western slope of the Sierra Nevada.

At times classification could be confusing because of the maze of mergers, take-overs, and spin-offs that took place in the Bodie mining district of the 1870s. In 1937 mining was again started in Morenci, not by underground methods, but rather by open pit methods. Stripping of waste from the top of the ore body lasted until 1942 when the first ore was delivered to the new Morenci concentrator and a new era of mining in the Morenci district began.
